About the Department

Our Department Chair

Rebecca K. Weinbaum serves as Chair of the Department of Counseling and Special Populations at Lamar University, Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPC-S), Certified School Counselor, and Play Therapist in the state of Texas. Research areas include youth-based mentoring, at-risk student success, creativity in counseling, supervision, multicultural counseling, and literature reviews for best practices in counseling and research.

With over 30 publications, two book chapters and a book in press, Dr. Weinbaum’s scholarship includes a recent article in the American Counseling Association flagship journal: Journal of Counseling & Development.

Dedicated to promoting work with children and adolescents,  Dr. Weinbaum has a longstanding involvement in the local chapter of the Association for Play Therapy (APT), specifically, the Sam Houston Association for Play Therapy.  She currently serves as a director-at-large for the Southern Educational Research Association (SERA).  Her dissertation topic (mentoring) and numerous publications in the area of youth-based mentoring underscore Dr. Weinbaum's passion to advocate for school counseling-community partnerships and student connectedness with adults for academic and personal success as outlined by the American School Counselor Association (2005) model and Educational Trust (2003) vision.

In 2014, Penny Finch was one of the keynote speakers at Lamar University's graduation ceremony—a first for an online student. In the midst of tragedy, with perseverance and determination, Penny earned her Master of Education in School Counseling at Lamar University while working and caring for her family. During her journey, she found love again and remarried.
