Southeast Texas has a very high rate of chronic conditions including obesity, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and several forms of cancers. Unfortunately, the burden of these chronic conditions is very high among low socioeconomic populations. Addressing these chronic diseases through culturally appropriate interventions is very critical in bridging the gap. Currently, no university in Texas or Louisiana offers a M.P.H. program specializing in health disparities. There is an unmet need in these states for public health professionals who are trained in addressing health disparities.
