Probationary Certification Requirements For Teachers Preparation

The prerequisites for probationary certification are as follows:

  • Must be an active student attending Lamar University and admitted into the Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification Program
  • Must hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • The request for a probationary certificate must be initiated by the Human Resources office of the school district on letterhead requesting to place the candidate on a probationary certification. The letter should include the candidate name, TEA number, position for hire, and grade level and email to Mrs. Debra Hayes at initial.certification@lamar.edu
  • Must show documented proof of 30 clock hours of field based experience within 90 days of employment if student teaching has not been completed.
  • Must meet specific prerequisite to be recommended to TEA for the Probationary Certificate

Teaching areas for Elementary

Holds Bachelors or higher degree

Passed the state exam (TExES) Content Area All Levels EC-12 or in Generalist EC-6/Core Subjects EC-6

Teaching areas for Middle and High School

Holds Bachelors or higher degree

Passed the state exam (TExES) in 4-8 or 7-12 Content Area

Special Education

Holds Bachelors or higher degree

Passed the state exam (TExES) in Content Area All Levels EC-12 or Generalist EC-6/Core Subjects EC-6 and pass TExES in Special Education EC-12

Middle and High school teachers must passed the state exam (TExES) in 4-8 or 7-12 Content Area and pass TExES Special Education EC-12

To be recommended for probationary certification by Lamar University you must apply in Tk20.

Complete the online application with the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC)

ALL REQUIREMENTS MUST BE COMPLETED INCLUDING TEACHING EXPERIENCE AND THE TEACHING INTERNSHIP ELIGIBILITY FORM RECEIVED FROM THE DISTRICT PRIOR TO BEING RECOMMENDED FOR PROBATIONARY CERTIFICATION.

Effective September 1, 2017, a candidate must meet all testing requirements for issuance of a probationary certificate. To meet the subject matter knowledge requirements to be issued a probationary certificate for an internship in a classroom teacher assignment, a candidate must pass the appropriate certification examination(s), including the appropriate pedagogy and professional responsibilities examination, as prescribed in Subchapter C of this chapter.
